Howard Candage founded H. E. Candage, Inc. in 1996. The mission of his company is to improve the effectiveness of the insurance industry.

He is highly regarded for his work in performance improvement. He brokers mergers and acquisitions and assists agencies to appropriately valuate their businesses. Howard provides insurance management and technical education throughout the United States.

For many years, Howard was a self-employed fisherman, owning a 40’ fishing vessel and gaining extensive experience fishing for lobsters, scallops, shrimp and ground fish. He became a marine surveyor, which led him to enter the insurance business. His real-time experience as a fisherman became a natural foundation for him to develop a record as a marine insurance specialist, developing a large book of business in the marine area, including tugs and barges, marine contractors, boat yards and marinas.

His experience in the insurance industry has seen him managing offices ranging in size from one-half million to over two million in premium volume. He began a branch office from "scratch", developing it to nearly two million in premium volume in approximately 40 months. During his years as an active agent with J. T. Rosborough and with W. C. Ladd & Sons, he achieved significant levels of insurance production and was a consistent sales leader, acknowledged by his receipt of the Maine “Young Agent of the Year” award, the “Personal Sponsorship Award” from the Maine Chapter of the Society of CPCU, and the American Association of Managing General Agents “Chairman’s Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Field of Insurance”. He is a former Partner of W. C. Ladd & Sons, of the Cole Harrison Agency/Atlantic Yacht Insurers, Risk Management Consultant, and was the Regional Marketing Manager of Hanover of Maine just prior to opening his own consulting firm. Additionally, he has had an opportunity to observe and work with the Underwriters at Lloyd’s of London and insurers in other parts of England.

Howard’s accolades include his being listed in Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who Among Young American Professionals, Who’s Who of Emerging Leaders in America, Who’s Who in the World, Who’s Who in Finance and Industry, Who’s Who in the East, Who’s Who in Executives and Professionals and Who’s Who in Insurance.

A frequent instructor for the Maine Insurance Agents Association and an adjunct professor at Kennebec Valley Community College, Howard is also a regular speaker at motivational and education seminars and the author of numerous papers and articles for both local and national publications, including: Professional Agent, The Standard, Maine Viewpoint, Rough Notes Magazine, and the Society of CPCU’s Risk Management Quarterly. He has also published textbooks, such as Delivering Insurance Services, Associate in Personal Insurance, and co-authored the American Institute’s Personal Insurance Leaders’ Guide. He is a course reviewer for the American Institute’s Commercial Insurance textbook, and serves as a faculty member at the School of Independent Insurance Agents of America’s Virtual University.
